The system is broken

Patient care and front-line staff are not priorities.

I am nearing the latter part of my nursing career, and I feel for the new graduates starting out in this current climate.

Let me start by saying I love nursing and always will.

I left front-line nursing in the emergency department to join management; naively, I thought I could “make a difference.”

Unfortunately, during my time as a nursing manager, I learned that change doesn’t occur and there are many egos in health care that call themselves “leaders.”

Patient care and front-line staff are not top priorities. I left management deflated, and to be honest, quite disgusted with the attitude that “nurses need more time-management skills, we don't need more staff.”

Front-line staff dwindles yet “leadership” positions continue to inflate. Huge paycheques for managers who are barely seen on the units, but they can't purchase essential equipment.

Something is definitely broken in this system.
