Members from Region 3 recently participated in the Community Month of Action, an initiative started by ONA’s Political Action Committee this summer, by obtaining signatures for ONA’s petition seeking safe staffing ratios and an end to privatization. Here, ONA111 Local Coordinator Peggy Dawson explains how the day went and what other members can do to get involved with our fight in their own communities.
We had a great time connecting with our community members at the farmers' market in Scarborough. The energy was good and many people stopped to talk to us and sign our petition. We collected 63 signatures in total!
So many people were receptive to what we had to say and appreciated the information we shared. Our team included two members from the North York Family Health Team (ONA6), who showed up to help. It was a great show of solidarity and a full-circle moment as we supported them whenever we could when they were out on strike last winter.
In our communities is where we should be, talking to the people we care for and educating them about what is happening right in their own backyards and in the hospitals where they seek care.
I encourage my fellow members to do this kind of outreach on an ongoing basis, even when there isn’t a petition to sign. One-on-one conversations with our fellow members are important to get their support and buy-in. But our communities also need to see us amongst them, so we need to be having one-on-one conversations with them too.
