Your fight is our fight

ONA has been standing in solidarity with our striking union siblings at Ontario Compensation Employees Union/Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) 1750 – and we’re getting the support right back.

These 3,600 workers hit the picket line on May 22, seeking a fair deal from their employer, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB), that addresses systemic work overload issues and a toxic workplace environment, validated by a third-party survey.

These workers play a critical role in delivering vital services to injured workers and employers across the province.

Even before they were forced to take strike action, ONA Provincial President Erin Ariss signed onto a letter organized by the Ontario Federation of Labour demanding the Ford government take action to ensure a fair and timely settlement.

They haven’t budged.

Public sector workers across Ontario stand to benefit from your courage and leadership.

Yet, despite the challenges these workers face after several weeks on the picket line, one of them, whom we are identifying by first initial only, took the time out to thank ONA for our advocacy. Take a read:

Dear ONA Team,

I am a member of CUPE 1750, currently on strike. I’m writing to share my support for your arbitration process and advocacy around safe staffing in Ontario’s hospitals.

The current conditions facing nurses — understaffing, excessive workloads, and wage suppression — are deeply unfair and dangerous for both workers and patients. Your call for regulated nurse-to-patient ratios is critical to preventing burnout, retaining skilled staff, and ensuring quality care.

Your fight is our fight. Public sector workers across Ontario stand to benefit from your courage and leadership in pushing for long-overdue systemic change in health care.

Please accept my sincere solidarity and support for your ongoing efforts.

In solidarity,

T

“This letter beautifully demonstrates what solidarity is all about,” says Ariss. “These dedicated workers have been forced onto the picket line in the heat of summer for weeks and yet here is one taking time to thank ONA for our work on behalf of all Ontario’s.

ONA calls on WSIB leadership to put a stop to this unnecessary strike by recognizing the value and dedication of these workers and engaging in good-faith bargaining now.

We urge all members to show your support to these workers as well.”
