Union representatives and other public health-care advocates across the country staged a rally outside the recent Council of the Federation meeting in Charlottetown, PEI to demand premiers stop the spread of American-style, two-tier health care before it takes root nationwide.
At the centre of their concerns? Albert’s recently passed Bill 11, which the Canadian Health Coalition (CHC), the organizer of the rally, warns lets doctors decide, patient by patient, whether to bill someone directly or the public system, opening the door to a parallel private tier where care depends on ability to pay rather than medical need.
This is a direct violation of the Canada Health Act, and if left unchallenged in Alberta, will spread province by province, the CHC says.
We’ve already seen plenty of evidence in Ontario.
“Ontario’s health-care system is a manufactured disaster, designed to pave the way for privatization, as the Ford government diverts at least one billion dollars in funding each year out of our public system and to private, for-profit clinics and services,” ONA Provincial President Erin Ariss told the rally, highlighting the serious ramifications in every sector for front-line staff and all Ontarians.

The group also urged Prime Minister Mark Carney and Health Minister Marjorie Michel to enforce the Canada Health Act and hold Alberta accountable for Bill 11.
