ONA issues Ontario budget priorities

Large crowd, including ONA members holding our signs, rallies at Queen’s Park.

Apart from rallying on the lawn at Queen’s Park, as these members, ONA also provides frequent submissions on government legislation and initiatives, including our annual pre-budget submission.

We weren’t about to let the cancellation of Ontario’s public pre-budget hearings stop us from having our say.

While the hearings were nixed due to Premier Ford’s snap election call at the end of January, we still released our 2025 pre-budget submission. In our submission, we provide 28 recommendations to the government on improving our public health-care system for Ontarians and health-care workers.

We put forward clear solutions to Ontario’s health-care understaffing crisis, how to protect quality of care, prioritize health and safety, fund equal wages, support survivors of intimate partner violence and invest in nursing students. Those recommendations include ensuring that there are safe staffing ratios and wage harmonization across all sectors.

“Ultimately, budgets are a question of priorities,” the submission states. “The government is spending $50 billion over 10 years on hospital infrastructure projects but not investing in staffing to ensure Ontarians receive the care they need. ONA members know that without the nurses and health-care professionals who provide care, hospitals are just furniture. It is past time that the government seriously address the understaffing crisis and prioritize the retention and recruitment of nurses and health-care professionals.”
