When it comes to Pride, ONA6 certainly knows how to mix business with pleasure!

“Over the last few years, the Local has been sponsoring a joint event with North York General Hospital for Pride,” explains ONA6 Local Coordinator Jane Penciner. “This year, we sponsored queer performer Yan Simon [a pop singer-songwriter, published recording artist and actor based in Ottawa] and the hospital sponsored drag queen Baby Bel Bel to entertain the crowd and pose for photos.”

The musical event, which also included a very popular ice-cream truck, took place in the back gardens of the hospital, and all employees were invited to attend.

Not one to miss an opportunity to raise nurses’ and health-care professionals’ serious concerns, Penciner notes that ONA6 staffed a table during the lunch-time event to “give out Pride stickers with our logo. We also used the event to get signatures for ONA’s safe staffing ratios and health care for all petitions.”

Penciner and many ONA6 members are also regular participants in the Toronto Pride Parde.
