Mounting pressure to pay fair for home care

Members of the ONA Board of Directors, including Provincial President Erin Ariss, join members and staff of our Victorian Order of Nurses Provincial Negotiating Team prior to the commencement of this round of bargaining.

Well, that got Premier Doug Ford’s attention!

On March 31, supporters of Victorian Order of Nurses (VON) members gathered for “a phone zap,” a targeted push to pressure the VON Board of Directors and the Ford Government to negotiate a fair deal by contacting them simultaneously.

VON members are gearing up for a crucial round of bargaining, not just for themselves, but for home care more broadly. Their demands are simple and speak to the need for health-care professionals working in home care to be compensated fairly through:

  • Wage parity with health-care professionals working in hospitals.
  • Improved benefits.

Home-care nurses travel across the province to support clients with complex medical needs, palliative care, chronic conditions and more. They do everything from administering medication and wound inspections to drawing blood and educating other caregivers and family members on how to provide care. The work is often done alone, in remote areas across the province, but despite the valuable care they provide, home-care registered nurses are the lowest paid RNs in the province. Without them, there is no home care.

Those who participated in the phone zap came together virtually to bring these demands to the VON Board of Directors. But they didn’t stop there. They also contacted Premier Doug Ford, Health Minister Sylvia Jones, Opposition leaders and MPPs, calling on them to properly fund home care and tell the VON Board to negotiate fairly.

Highlights of the phone zap:

  • About 50 people participated, completing 180 calls in just 25 minutes.
  • One participant talked to Premier Doug Ford on the phone for 10 minutes!
  • Another participant left their information in a voicemail and received a call from Minister Jones the next day.
  • Another still reached a VON Board member and won his support after sharing our demands.

In addition to these calls, more than 160 emails have been sent to date to these targets, reiterating the campaign messaging and demands.

But the job isn’t done, and it won’t be until ONA members at VON obtain wage parity and improved benefits. Join them in their fight by visiting our VON campaign page.
